This oak sideboard, dating from around the 1920s and found in France, displays strong British Edwardian style characteristics. It features symmetrical double doors on each side with a central drawer section, while the legs and columns are adorned with the classic barley twist carving — a design distinguished by its spiraled form, often seen on furniture legs and supports. The barley twist motif originated in 17th-century Europe and regained popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Paired with geometric relief panels on the doors, the piece reflects the elegance and structural refinement of English craftsmanship. Its balanced proportions and restrained decoration combine functionality with timeless beauty.
The sideboard retains its original “Beau Ivorie” and “Grace Bros Pty Ltd” labels, indicating its origin from the Grace Bros department store furniture line in Australia. This series drew inspiration from English classical design and was highly regarded between the 1920s and 1940s. With its poised structure, subtle ornamentation, and cross-cultural provenance, this sideboard stands as a fine piece of furniture that embodies both historical depth and international character.
